I was very excited for this book, having heard the author speak about his writing influences. However, the sample made me think that this is one of those books where you hate all of the characters. To be fair, I think that many of the Greek god/goddess characters in the original myths are also all horrible.

One of the other things that made me think I would not enjoy this story was the narrator. The narrator seems like they have a similar attitude to the "too many witty asides" narrator of "Everyone In My Family Has Killed Someone." I completely understand that I'm a particular reader that is turned off by those characters, and that others find them charming.

Generally, when I read mysteries, I'm more interested in the characters and the setting more than the plot. Perhaps I'm putting Louise Penny or Jane Harper standards on a mystery designed for an unreliable narrator or unlikable characters.
