“We are all the unreliable narrators of our own lives.”

Truthfully, none of us are telling the truth. We all believe that our actions are justified in the end.

Told from a first person perspective, the narrator, Elliot Chase tells the tale of a murder. Or perhaps a love story? He reassures the reader they are more or less the same anyway. Lana Farrar, a reclusive former Hollywood star decides to spontaneously invite her friends away on a trip on Easter weekend. What follows is a whirlwind of events, including a terrible storm and unrequited love, ultimately culminating to tragedy.

Immediately, I felt drawn into this book. I was captivated by the setting —a private Greek island promising radiance and beauty. However, what is on the surface is not all that it seems. At the beginning of the book, I needed to know how the story would progress, but felt that there was a lot of unnecessary additional text and fluff.

Having previously read The Silent Patient, this was a highly anticipated read for me. Alex Michaelides has a very unique writing style, and it is clear that he continues to imaginatively take the readers along for the wildest ride of their lives in this book. The twists and turns were unlike any I had seen before and had me at the edge of my seat, especially as the book began to reach its end. Besides, there is more than meets the eye, and someone isn't being completely honest.

This book is divided up into five acts, much like a play (or Greek tragedy, befittingly), and contains a unique and unlikable cast of characters —I felt confused who to root for. While the book seems to drag on at the beginning with needless details about their trip to the island and the narrator's past, I found myself lost in a maze of inconceivable twists and turns by the time I reached the end.

Despite the somewhat slow pacing, egotistical narrator, and stagnant parts, I really did enjoy this book, and would recommend it to anyone searching for an escape — come along on this deadly island getaway.
