This had the most engaging opening to a book I've read in a while. I love the narrative voice of the main character, Elliot, and everything about the theatric way that he talks, as if he's not just telling the story, but performing it for an audience. I already get the feeling that he's an unreliable narrator, which is my favorite kind, especially when it comes to whodunnit murder mysteries.. He even compares his part in the story to waiting in the wings of a stage! Love it.

The cover is a little offputting, which I think is intentional. Evil eyes are creepy, and I only just noticed the woman in the center of the eye. While I was admittedly a bit disppointed by "The Maidens," I'm really excited to give Michaelides's new book a read!
