I have fond memories of growing up with the first three books of the Artemis Fowl series and swapping theories and reactions with my friends. It may be a case of rose-colored glasses, but I remember being enamored of the boy criminal's adventures and spending hours trying to decipher the fairy language. Unfortunately, as I aged out of the books, I found Eoin Colfer's latter works to be pale imitations of the original stories and lost interest somewhere between books four (Opal Deception) or five (Lost Colony). Colfer's latest series is a spinoff based on Artemis' twin brothers Myles and Beckett. I picked the book up, partly out of nostalgia and partly hoping that it was a return to form for Colfer. While I found the story to be serviceable, I think it lacks the charm and magic of the first books.
