I grew up reading and loving the Artemis Fowl series so I was excited to read this one! Fortunately, it did not disappoint, although I still like the original series much better. Young readers will love this (and of course older readers returning to this series will as well). I will say that while being familiar with the original series is nice, it is not absolutely necessary for this book, as it is a new story and a new set of characters, however there will be more appreciation for the world and the backstory if you are familiar with it.
The story has its usual dark humor and wit, puns (a group of villains who belong to a group whose acronym is ACRONYM!), and memorable characters. Myles and Beckett had big shoes to fill but I enjoyed them as characters a lot! It was nice to have a different version of twins, where they are very different and have a complicated sibling relationship that I think children will relate to as well.
