The Fountains of Silence is a historical fiction novel about Spain in the aftermath of the Spanish Civil War. Franco ruled with an iron fist and the entire country was silent.

“Only because we tried to stay silent. Silence warps everything.”

Ana has learned to stay silent. Her parents were killed for being “reds” or Republicans, and she and her siblings had to fend for themselves. Ana manages to get a job in a hotel that caters to rich Americans, and it is a chance for redemption and a way out of poverty for her. Until she meets Daniel, an 18-year-old American, and sparks fly.

Daniel wants to be with her but Ana can’t risk everything to date a hotel guest. As Daniel snaps photos in Madrid, working on a portfolio to get him into journalism school, he becomes enmeshed in Ana’s world and the two of them are warned repeatedly about the danger of their trying to make a go of it.

A love story wrapped in a novel about the healing power of sharing our deepest secrets.
