Sucked me in unexpectedly
I generally do not like historical fiction. Every time I've attempted to read one I gave up. This first few chapters of this book I felt the same, but at some point that stopped and I was totally sucked into the story. I ended up finishing the book in just 2 sittings. This was my first book by Ruta Sepetys, but it won't be my last. Her characters were fantastic and I felt transported to Spain. I had no idea of the history of the country, and Ruta did such an amazing job of explaining and exploring it. I felt so connected to these characters and felt pain at what the people of this time must have gone through.
There were a character I never connected with, and that was the bull fighter. I didn't really understand him or his purpose, and I'm still trying to decide if he actually was in love with Ana or if there was another reason for his actions.
