Silent No More
What a lovely book! Ruta Sepetys has a knack for tapping into lesser know pieces of history and bringing them to life in her beautiful novels. I have been a long time fan of this author and Fountains of Silence did not disappoint. Within a few chapters, I was fully immersed in the story. Each character is uniquely written and vibrant in their own way.
Before reading Fountains of Silence, I had very little knowledge of 1950’s Spanish history. I loved the way the author used quotes from various historical documents at the heading of each section. These intros were intriguing as well as informative – giving the reader a broader picture of the environment. The history itself is heartbreaking, but like so many other instances in history is a story that needs to be told. Sepeyts does a beautiful job of crafting the characters and the story through the lenses of this important piece of history. The book left me hungry for more of the real story.
