I read a lot of historical fiction. How have I missed the magic that is Ruta Sepetys?! Her writing is, well, magical. I was instantly drawn into the story and immediately attached to the characters. Authors sometimes take building their characters to painful extremes, while Sepetys seemingly writes like we already know these people, and instantly, they are real...we are enchanted; we are there beside them.
The Spanish Civil War is a period in history that I have only encountered in my previous readings as a sideline; a mere blip on the historical radar. In just a few pages, I have been convinced I need to do some serious research on this subject. I had no idea of the severe, drastic changes the citizenry of Spain went through. From Democracy to dictatorship in such a short time...a dizzying concept I can only imagine was hellish for those who actually experienced it.
August cannot get here soon enough. I am going to imagine many scenarios that may come next, and I know none of them will come close to the genius of Ruta Sepetys. I can see this being a read-in-one-sitting book.
