“They stand in line for blood” A truly haunting line that appears multiple times throughout A Fountain of Silence and captures what it was like to live in Spain under Francisco Franco’s regime. Ruta Sepetys once again takes a piece of untaught history and brings it to the attention of readers of all ages.

The novel is told in the 3rd Person POV but switches on the focus character in different chapters. All but one of the characters she focuses on are members of a family, this creates an incredible suspense as you see all the hidden secrets that each character has that the others are unaware of. By having another character, Daniel, be a foreigner thriving for answers, I as a reader could empathize with Daniel as he tries to discover truths in a world that’s unknown to him. I will be honest though, there was one character whose story I struggled to truly become attached to. Puri, a girl working in an orphanage. While her personal storyline was interesting at times, I couldn’t bring myself to like her character the way I did the others.

I was enthralled and loved the novel. Sepetys creates an atmosphere that has a perfect balance of heavy sadness, hope, and love. I felt so many feelings; Ruta Sepetys has an incredible talent for telling untold stories and creating characters that draw you in (both main and supporting characters). I applaud this novel and feel this is a story more people should know about.
