Exquisite detail and language only Ruth can write. She envelopes the reader into the world of Spain within a few paragraphs. I was completely enthralled by the characters and how broken they seemed, yet still strong enough to go on.
Ana and Rafa lost their parents to a tyrant Francisco Franco many years ago because they sought to teach the people of Spain more. They were executed in front of them. Now years later, they both keep silent and do the work that is expected of them. Inside they are both remembering though. They get through the days by daydreaming of better times, better lives and fantasizing their revenge.
Any reader lucky enough to have read books by this author knows that her words will wound you ,they will change you, you won't be able to look away but you'll be better for it.
