This is an incredible Historical Fiction set in the 1950’s at the time when fascist dictator General Francisco Franco’s regime was in full force in Spain. We are introduced to a family living in the shadows and what is left of themselves living with the consequences of the war; an imprisoned mother and worse a father they love and admire executed in front of their eyes as children.
Never forgetting this event, they live their lives at a time when tourists are finally allowed back into the country while Rafa and Ana try to find their foothold back in society. Rafa is now working menial and low paying jobs in a butcher but obviously a damaged soul always replaying that awful day in his mind. Ana on the other hand is working in a hotel and doing her best to put on a smile as if the world depended on it just to survive.
I want to read more of this amazing story that hooked me right from the start!! Incredible writing that flowed impeccably and characters that are complex and relatable I want to read more of.
