Ruta Sepetys has become an auto-read author for me and this was one of my most anticipated books of the year. Before reading this book I was completely in the dark about Franco and what happened in Spain during his reign in the 1950s. It's appalling the lengths someone will go to for power and spite. I think that this book was a good introduction to the Spanish Civil War and plan to do some further reading into the subject.

It took me longer to get into this one, probably because of the quick point-of -view changes as well as the number of 'main characters' but once I was in it, I was IN it. I appreciated the snippets from public record throughout which provided insight into the mindsets of the time. While this book was totally different than any other of Ruta's books it was very well researched and written and left me wanting more.
