“When you discover the truth, you must speak it aloud and help others to do the same. Truth breaks the chains of silence.”.... “It sets us all free.” - Ruta Sepetys, The Fountains of Silence

This was my first novel by the author and it won’t be the last. It was amazing. Madrid, Spain 1957. The country is opening it’s doors to the world after The Spanish Civil War. Though I knew very little about it, Sepetys recreated the world and informed the reader and allowed me to escape and enjoy this heart-wrenching story of Ana and Daniel. Reading this right after The World That We Once Knew was definitely a bit heavy and a reminder of how it doesn’t matter the religion, humans have caused atrocities over it for centuries. Sadly, we still are.

This was a 5 ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ read for me and I recommend it if you love getting immersed in a part of history and culture you may not know much about, love character driven stories, and don’t mind heart-wrenching but hope filled endings.

I can’t wait to read others by Ruta Sepetys.
