Just like with Ruta's prior books, she gives you just enough description of the setting, characters and relationships to leave you questioning and wanting to read more. You are drawn into the storyline to continue to read in order to figure out the puzzle. Just like when the Coen brothers digitally altered O Brother Where Art Thou to give the movie a dust bowl feel, this cover does the same but with a Franco dictatorship twist. Ana (or I assume Ana) is looking over her left shoulder which according to film studies is the weaker side but she is showing the right hand side of her face. She is placed centered on the cover and leaning towards the right. Could this be a hint that our heroine will ultimately find her happy ending after going through turmoil of Franco's regime? There is some just captivating about the picture of Franco's victory parade from May 1939 that is included at the beginning. As a testament to Ruta's strength as a researcher, she includes historical facts, transcripts and synopsis to help the reader place Franco's place in history since most us are not aware. I can only assume this will continue as the story progresses. Ruta also expertly includes Spanish words and phrases without making the reader fee like they are sitting in a Spanish I classroom. There is a part of me that secretly hopes Ernest Hemingway with his love of bullfighting will make a cameo appearance. How will Ana and this hotel that she works for collide with Daniel from Texas who dreams of being a photojournalist? How will Julia and Rafa's storylines also unfold? Inquiring minds must be patient to the publication date later this fall.
