Through this First Impression we meet the main characters of the story and learn a bit of their backstories. Rafa, the butcher boy who dreams of being a matador. Ana, the housekeeper at the Castellana Hilton Madrid, the "49th US state" due to the high number of Americans there, at a time when anything unSpanish is banned. Daniel, the American guest at the hotel to whom Ana is assigned. And Puri, who works in an orphanage but we don't learn that much about here.
So far, it is obvious that something is going on in Spain. It seems so similar to Germany during the Nazi regime, but I had never heard of anything like it before.
