I love historical fiction. And I love reading historical fiction that takes place during WWI and WWII. But that niche seems particularly oversaturated at the moment, so what a breath of fresh (repressed) air is Ruta Sepetys' Fountains of Silence, about the Spanish Civil War. Daniel is visiting from America with oil magnate father and Spanish born mother. While his family wants him to take over the oil business, he wants to be a photojournalist. Ana works in the hotel Daniel's family is staying in. After her father is killed and her mother imprisoned for going against leadership wishes, the American hotel is stoking dreams of a different life and change in Ana's heart. While I know the war eventually ended, I can't wait to see what happens to Daniel and Ana.
