I think while this book is fiction it is important to remember that the story itself is rooted in fact. During a time unfortunately that many people haven’t learned about. The story takes place in Madrid Spain in 1957 during the rise of the fascist dictator Francisco Franco. Books like these are so important for people not just young adults but older generations too. While most know a lot about dictators such as Hitler and Stalin I don’t remember learning much about Francisco Franco and it’s gradual take over of Spain during this period. It’s so important to learn about these unspeakable acts in history because it reminds us how fragile freedom is and how powerful government propaganda can be. We need to read these stories to remind us of the past so we can learn from it. The story centers around three siblings Rafael, Ana and Julia and Daniel Matheson the son of a wealthy oil magnet. How will they navigate this period of war and the rise of fascism and racism. Being a huge historical nerd I would love to find out not only about how the characters navigate a war torn world but I would love to learn more about the rise of a dictator took over a democratic country.
