Historical fiction from an often overlooked time and place

During the early 20th centuries dictators came to power around the globe, this included Francisco Franco in Spain. After winning a bloody civil war, Franco took power and ruled for 36 years. During that time Spain was run as a military dictatorship; travel was heavily restricted, the media was censured, and dissidents were persecuted. This book follows members of a family in Madrid trying to rebuild their lives under a less restrictive rules in the 1950s. The book shifts timelines to reveal events that formed the characters personalities and how they are trying to move forward. Ana, her brother Rafi, and her sister Julia live together and work to make ends meet. Ana meets Daniel, a wealthy American with a Spanish-born mother and all of their paths begin to change. This book combines history, imagery, family, and love; a pretty great combination.
