Ruta Sepetys (Between the Shades of Gray) has found a niche in a) telling beautiful and haunting stories that are, b) set in desperate times and places, and c) largely unknown to an American audience. Sepety's newest novel, The Fountains of Silence, appears to hit all the criteria above, and then some.

The hazy, sepia light and the woman who is, notably, looking back invokes a harsh nostalgia. Remembering, or maybe unable to forget, a reminiscence that binds fact and loss. Knowing very little about Spain's dark history of fascist dictatorship, I am eager to keep reading to learn, and then to remember.
