So after reading this book, I am reflecting on the title and it seems to me that there could be a few "first mistakes" and that they could belong to a couple of different people. This is the kind of book that I'd love to read again now that I've read it and look for the little clues that I might have missed along the way the first time. What was the first mistake that the title is referring to? It could be very literal or it could go beyond that!
Alice is devastated about the loss of her first husband, Tom. Her life is in turmoil until she meets Nathan. Alice, Nathan, Alice's daughter by her first husband, and their own daughter Olivia seem to be the perfect family. Alice has been through a lot and her life is finally on the upswing; or so it seems. When Alice begins to suspect Nathan of being unfaithful things start to change. Nathan insists that he is not having an affair. If that's the case then why are there so many clues pointing to the fact that he is? Alice confides her best friend Beth, whom Nathan has never met.
The sections in this book alternate between Alice and Beth. At first their stories seem totally unconnected but as the book continues into the last section things begin to get tied together in a surprising way.
