The First Mistake by Sandie Jones is a thrilling read from start to finish. Alice, a mother to two children from different men, struggles with the death of her first husband and is wary of her second husband’s motives. Beth, conned by a man who she thought was in love with her, vows to pay vengeance to him and those in his path. These two female lead characters are strong and seduced and led by the same man, unbeknownst to Alice, to be conned. Reading from Beth and Alice’s perspective gives clarity and puts the pieces of the whole narrative together. By the end of the story, Beth and Alice make up and come together to fight back against their con artist. It is fitting that he dies at their hands. While it was an enjoyable read, I could guess at what was going to happen and it lacked some originality in moments of conversation. Overall though, it was suspenseful and I’m glad of the demise Nathan received at the end.
