The First Mistake was an interesting story, in that it held my attention with only three main characters. But, there was so much going on between the three of them, that my mind was spinning trying to figure out what was going to happen next.

Alice lost her first husband, Tom, tragically during a skiing accident. She then married Nathan, and they have a picture-perfect marriage and a successful business. Beth, Alice's best friend, has been there for Alice for the last few years, always lending a shoulder for Alice to cry on and offering her support as best friends do.

When Alice's life starts to turn tumultuous, she starts to wonder if her best friend is really as trustworthy as she originally thought. Alice battles with trusting her friend and trying to sort out her life on her own. But with all the tragedy and heartbreak Alice has been through, can she handle what she is about to uncover?

This is the first book I read by Sandie Jones, and I enjoyed it. However, I have seen other reviewers make the comment that suspense/thriller writers are all starting to follow the same formula, there is no "new" twist, just different characters in different places, which makes most books in the genre predictable. I typically would disagree, but this book actually makes me believe the previous statement it true. Was I surprised by the ending? Yes. Was it a bit predictable? Yes. Did I have the ending figured out? Partially.

I am not saying "don't read this book." I did enjoy it, I just felt that it is a bit more predictable than some other thrillers I have read lately. The story held my attention, though I did feel it lagged in the middle for about 50 or so pages. The story itself was unique, for which I was grateful. The writing style seemed a bit... immature? minor-league? I'm not entirely sure what the correct word is here, but it seemed very simple, and I guess I was expecting maybe a bit more in that sense.

This was a very fast read for me, and was not as heavy as some of the other thrillers I have read, which was a nice change of pace. This was not a haunting, scary, "I won't be able to sleep tonight" kind of book, but it still had all of the suspense and twists that I have come to love and expect in a thriller. I will definitely be reading more of Jones in the future.
