I had high hopes for this psychological thriller, and it did not disappoint. It exceeded all of my expectations, and I even liked it better than the author’s debut book, “The Other Woman.”

The story is told from the viewpoints of best friends, Alice and Beth. (Alice’s story is told in the present while Beth’s is told in a flashback.) Even though Alice lost her first husband, Tom, in a tragic accident, she now has the perfect life with her second husband, Nathan. She and Nathan even work together at Alice’s successful interior design business. Beth hasn’t been so lucky; she is a struggling single mother, who claims she doesn’t know what happened to her child’s father because he just disappeared one day.

Unfortunately, I can’t discuss this book or the characters the way I’d like due to spoilers, but this was definitely my kind of story. I also really enjoyed the author’s writing style; she can write about mundane activities (e.g., picking up the kids from school, dealing with school drama, having drinks with a friend, etc.) in a way that keeps the reader wondering where the story might be heading and what twists await. (Because you know there will be twists!) I ended up being completely wrong about where I thought the plot was going, and let me tell you it was a very, very nice surprise! Once I knew what the story was really about, I could not put it down. Five stars all the way!
