The Extraordinaries was extraordinary, not because it was a beautifully written masterpiece, but because it takes the impossible, illogical, and unlikely and makes it believable. This book, written about a teenage fanfic writer of his local superheroes, took me right back to my own teenage years of reading fanfic of my favorite fandom characters. It read like a fanfic to me. But it also brought out a sense of conceivable and relatable teenage conflict and struggle that we all experience at this stage in life. And though at the newly acquired age of 30, this book made me realize that I truly do not resonate with YA books anymore because I find the angst and awkwardness of those years (even in my own memory) so skin crawlingly cringy that I almost can’t stand it; I still enjoyed the overall reading experience. And have already recommended this book to the young people in my life. I commend TJ Klune on his first YA Novel, and honestly, hope to see a sequel in the future.
