I received an Advanced Reading Copy of this book from Bookish First in exchange for an honest review.

The Extraordinaries is an adorable, sweet, and happy read. There are a few heavy parts that made me tear up but overall this is a “feel good” novel.

I loved the humor in this book. Nick and his group of friends clearly care deeply for one another but that doesn’t stop the sarcasm and jokes from flowing, which I just couldn’t get enough of! I also was impressed with how open and honestly Nick talked about his feelings and his actions (right or wrong). The emotional maturity of characters in this book was refreshing.

There was so much I loved about this book but unfortunately for me it was very predictable. There was no big reveal for me. I guess I’m kind of like Jazz. Gibby’s suggestive comments were too obvious in my opinion although she did lead me to initially think Seth was Shadow Star.

I just knew Nick has powers. The medication and the headaches...I knew where things were headed. I assume his mother also had powers and somehow Martha freaking knows.

I love Seth and Nick together however at times Nick’s friend group (including Seth) was kind of crappy to him. The group at times talks down to Nick...and treats him like he is an idiot. I’m interested to see how Seth and Nick’s relationship progresses. It seems like they have been completely devoted to each other for a long time however I foresee some challenges in the relationship. I don’t really think it’s fair to say Seth became extraordinary for Nick...Seth was already extraordinary, Nick’s pain just made him feel want to protect not just Nick but all of Nova City.

Then there is Owen...Owen, Owen, Owen...I really thought there was hope for him. I want to believe those glimpses of sincerity he showed Nick were real BUT I just can’t because he literally would have let Nick die. I really thought Owen had developed feelings for Nick but it’s clear he was using him (and that never changed). I still hope Owen gets that chance to redeem himself and maybe cause a little friction between Seth and Nick (because drama).

This is an fabulous first book in what is sure to be an amazing series! I can’t wait to see where the adventure takes us in book 2.
