The Extraordinaries follows a teenager named Nick who is obsessed with some real life superheros (and villains) that have unique powers called Extraordinaries. Nick is also fighting a diagnosis he received, ADHD. Nick is in the love with the hero Shadow Star and wants desperately to become an Extraordinary so Shadow Star will notice him and fall in love. Nick also finds himself at odds with his ADHD diagnosis and believes becoming an Extraordinary will allow him to become his best self.

This novel was witty, fun and fast paced. The writing was very fluid and I felt the characters were developed very well. It was sometimes exhausting being "in" Nick's head, which I'm sure is exactly how it is for people with ADHD. The reader is allowed to be clued in to what the "twist" of the novel is, while Nick is oblivious to it as he continues his journey to Extraordinary powers. This felt a little anticlimactic in that sense and the ending action scenes were not as explosive or filled with as much tension as I would have liked. Overall, this was a great LGBTQ+ YA novel and one I think will be quite popular upon release.
