It's great to see LGBTQI characters being recognized in YA novels more and more these days. And The Extraordinaries clearly acknowledges that LGBTQI folk are expert at writing fan fiction. It is great to see such a subject explored in a novel that appears to take place in a world where superheroes (and supervillains) actually exist. By showcasing Nick's crush in an unapologetic way, the book welcomes all those who fanatasize about relationships with fictional characters by depicting such a situation in real terms. There's nothing wrong with dreaming, and perhaps that can provide someone with the opportunity to understand more about themselves and their relationship with the world around them. The format appears clever, with the example of the fan fiction resembling an actual online presence while the overall writing is clear and concise. This should make for a worthwhile and fulfilling read.
