Underwhelming

I went into this book really optimistic. The setup of present day 2019 just really starting to see the effects of climate change to decades into the future where the entire world is burning was really intriguing. I couldn't wait to see the link between the two. But the further into the story I got, the more underwhelmed I felt.

Signe starts off as this old badass lady, doing what she can to prevent the further destruction of her home. How awesome is that? However, the more you hear from her and find out her backstory, more annoyed I got with her and the more I realized how petty her actions really are. So much of her actions revolve around the fact that she never changes. She's so much of the mentality that she is right and that others must bend around her. This is her driving force and what pushes her to sail across the ocean in her tiny boat, to prove a point that she was right.

David, on the other hand, I just felt sorry for. You have this young guy, so not ready to be a father, suddenly having to take care of his young daughter alone in apocalyptic conditions. I just desperately want everything to work out for him and his daughter. And the thing is, you never really find out if they do. And that's where I felt the most disappointment from this book. Signe's story gets more or less wrapped up where David is just left there with the minute hope that everything might work out.

All in all, it wasn't an awful book, it had some beautiful imagery and really made me ache for the losses in the environment. It was interesting to keep me reading and wonder what was going to happen next, but when I got to the end I just felt meh.
