In the first couple of pages, I was distracted trying to keep up with the Norwegian geography, but was soon wrapped up in Signe's story. I get the sense of deep connection - to place, to other people, to ourselves - and very quickly notice the foreshadowing of devastation due to climate change. I especially appreciated an early dig at tourists who travel great distances to see beautiful landscapes but the very act of doing so contributes to their destruction. When we switch to the not-so-far future of 2041, we see more clearly the earth's devastation and its impacts on people's lives in Europe. This early on in the book we can already see the power of water and its necessity for human life but also its power to kill. I am really looking forward to seeing where this story goes!
