I do not think I have ever read a book about Filipino mythology with such great cultural representation, and this is so well done! The story follows MJ, a half human young woman who has been hiding in the human realm and hiding the fact that she is half encanto. When her estranged father King Vivencio suddenly dies she is next in line to take the throne. Easier said than done when she must navigate the beautiful but new world of Biringan and win over a council who mostly objects to her taking the throne as a half human. As she navigates investigating her father’s death she makes some allies along the way and now much save Biringan from a terrible fate! So obviously my favorite part is the incorporation of Filipino culture and Fairy Tales. The story line and setting are unparalleled and so rich in culture. MJ as the main character is geared toward a younger YA crowd in my opinion and the story also tended to be more in that line as well. It’s definitely interesting, but also somewhat basic. But the culture awesome and brings so many fun new characters and places to read about! I voluntarily reviewed this after receiving a free copy.
