This is a strange little story to read during a pandemic. It's postapocalyptic in that the world has been destroyed by a man-made virus that changed an insect, I'm not telling you which one, into a blood thirsty agent of death. It looks like it's curtains for the human species. And this is where things get very strange.
I don't know how much I can say without spoiling it for you. You do want to read this story. Our main focus is Nico, a girl who was born just before the world was destroyed. She spends 18 years living with her parents in a farmhouse. At 18, her father sends her to Manchester, to the Anomaly. There are other Anomalies in other places, but Nico's father doesn't know what they do. He isn't sure what the Anomaly in Manchester does. He just knows Nico needs to go there.
The majority of the book is the journey. Nico meets a group of other young people who are traveling in the same direction. She joins them, although the Flies can find larger groups easier. When the time comes for the group to fragment and go in different directions, we stay with Nico.
I know I can't say what happens when Nico arrives at the Anomaly. I had to read that section over again so I would have the right of it. This is where things get really strange.
I did enjoy the journey. I'm not so sure about ending. I will let you decide for yourself. The book is interesting and weird. I liked it.
I won the copy of this book that I read for this review from BookishFirst.
