From the first look at the book, it's got a strong hook that immediately drew me in and made me want to learn more. The characters seem very realistic, and the interplay between the characters is quite engaging. It doesn't often work when a writer attempts to integrate slang into character conversations for several reasons: the slang becomes quickly dated, it comes across as an adult trying to sound cool instead of actually working, and it pulls the reader out of the story. In this case, however, the use of slang actually worked to make the characters more relatable, primarily because the slang words selected are so innocuous that they do not represent a single time period, increasing the ease with which the reader can slip into the story. Overall, I would have preferred if the excerpt was a bit longer and I think this is one that I would really enjoy reading once it comes out.
