I received a free ARC of this book in exchange for an honest review. This book was a breath of fresh air to me, a stressed-out college student looking to immerse myself in a fictional world. I expected blood, gore, and all of the typical shock and awe of dystopian books, but that is not the world I was greeted with. I was greeted with a world of beauty and sadness, a planet full of people grieving what they had lost and looking to protect who and what they still had left. Seldom do books successfully and convincingly show apocalyptic worlds through children's eyes, but this book does just that. This book showed me sometimes, the aftermath of something is more impactful and haunting than the event itself. This book made me think about what I would do in this world and was a real treat to read. It was like a rich meal, needing to be taken in small doses to appreciate all of the components' beauty.
