I honestly wasn’t sure I’d enjoy a book about a pregnant woman whose unborn baby girl has a heart defect that will kill her and the mysterious suggestion her brother-in-law has to save the baby’s life; however, since I never read anything by this best-selling author before, I thought I might as well see what she does with a plot like that.

The book was more interesting than I thought it would be. Diane Chamberlain does a wonderful job of developing the characters, and I came to like them all. That isn’t always possible, but in this book it works. The little details about the things they cared about and the trials they experienced in their lives really added to the depth of the people involved. The emotions were so well described that at times I found myself experiencing them too. At other times I found myself holding my breath because the book had twists and turns that made me unsure about how things were going to turn out. I did not expect this to be a suspenseful, page-turner, but it was. There were also some excellent details about how people lived and the technology in the years involved.

If like me, you think the plot may not be one of your favorites, you might be surprised to find you like this book. I recommend it.
