While the premise of “The Dream Daughter” is quite interesting – a mother who will do anything to help her unborn child – the Sci-Fi “esque” time-traveling tale was far too much to take in.

I was introduced to the author from her MIRA books “The Courage Tree” and “Cypress Point” in the early 2000’s.

I get that every once in a while an author will have a book that doesn’t hold up to previous expectations, and some are written to fulfill an obligation – but this was definitely a stretch of incredulity.

This deals with a Vietnam-era widow (Carly) who is pregnant with the only child she’ll ever have with her husband who she believes is dead. There’s one catch – the child would be born with a near-fatal heart condition for the time.

Enter Carly’s “near-genius” brother-in-law (Hunter) who is really from the future (2018) where in today’s time fetal heart surgery is commonplace. He sends her to the future to have the surgery.

While I don’t know exactly that much about the surgery – some have suggested it is more than one. But, this gaffe is not the only one. Even being from 2018, Hunter seemingly forgets SUCH A SIGNIFICANT EVENT as 9/11.

For some reason – and I couldn’t finish it, but the readers learn that Carly doesn’t return home with the baby. When she tries to go back to retrieve her, she’s taken to the wrong time.

If you don’t mind time-travel and implausible plots – this might be for you. If you enjoy a more realistic and plausible read – I’d borrow it from the library before you buy.
