There is something that is really wonderful about a book that surprises you. I thought that The Dinner List would be one thing- about a tense, strange dinner party with people from Sabrina's past (plus Audrey Hepburn for fun), most of whom she has a fraught relationship with. However, there was a turn in this book that just suckerpunched me, broke my heart, and made this story into something deeper than i expected.
While Sabrina has something to say to most of the characters, the meat of this story is about her relationship with Tobias. We know at the beginning that they are not together anymore, but the circumstances are unclear. In flashback chapters, readers see their long relationship, its ups and downs. They weren't necessarily perfect for each other- but the challenges they had made their story more real. I was fighting tears at the end of this book- it's an unexpected gem.
