In college, Sabrina and her BFF Jessica make a list of the five people, dead or alive, they would like at their dinner party. Fast-forward to Sabrina’s 30th birthday dinner, and the people she selected are all there to celebrate.

Except for Audrey Hepburn, the reader doesn’t know which of the guests – estranged father, best friend, beloved professor, soul mate, are dead and which are alive. Throughout the dinner, Sabrina explores these relationships. Interspersed with the dinner party chapters are flashbacks to Sabrina’s life leading to greater insights into each storyline, and fantastic pacing for the book.

Kudos to author Rebecca Serle on a fresh twist to a universal premise (who hasn’t played the who would you invite game with their BFF???). I was also impressed by the clever use of Audrey Heburn as a literary device to advance each storyline along.

The Dinner List was a great quick read, with a fantastic icing-on-the-cake ending. I quickly hushed any curiosity on how the characters got to the table, and just enjoyed the ride.

Thank you to Bookish First and Flatiron Books for the ARC of The Dinner List in exchange for a candid review.
