I had expected to enjoy this book based on its premise: five people, alive and dead, meet to celebrate a 30th birthday. Who hasn’t had to come up with their own dinner list before? I expected a fun and maybe funny story based around that concept.

What I hadn’t expected was to fall in love with the main characters. This was an unexpectedly beautiful love story in many forms, from the love between best friends who are trying to remain connected even as lives change, to the imperfect and complicated love of a parent who couldn’t live up to ideals, to first love, to the love of idols.

There’s an element of altered reality that you’re just going to have to go along with in order to enjoy the ride. Just go with it. Excellent read.
