I really value the importance of the story told and how it was told. The Deep gives us a different outlook on slavery and black lives with an intermixing of fantasy and folklore. I do not read a lot of stories with mermaids as the main protagonists, however this book had me wanting to see what else is out there. The writing is outstanding. I did at times feel a little lost in translation so I think rereading this book would be a great help. Other than those few hiccups, I did thoroughly like what this book had to say. The struggles of slavery and what possible outcome could be had for such violence. This was also my first time reading a Rivers Solomon book and I look forward to reading other titles by them.
