Once I read the blurb - I was hooked! Pregnant African slaves, thrown overboard whose descendants are now mermaids. Their history is so traumatic that only one is blessed/cursed with the memory.
The Deep is a modern take on an African folklore, which was brought over by African slaves when they were brought to America. The story does discuss slavery and how it has impacted on a culture, but The Deep also explores how to overcome and move on from traumatic experiences.
The Deep was a beautifully poetically written story, it was enjoyable to read and I thoroughly enjoyed learning about a new folklore story that I had not experienced yet.
