Wakanda under the sea
From the first page, when you realize the characters are under water, you are hooked. It's such a futuristic, fantastical premise -- yet the relationships and themes of this story so relatable. I could feel Yetu's pain and the weight of her responsibility of remembering the history of her people. It is such a unique way of re-imagining the cruelties of the slave trade: pregnant women who were thrown overboard give birth to water-dwelling creatures.
As I was reading, I couldn't imagine how the story could end, but I was satisfied with the ending that they came up with. Yetu, Oori, and the wajinru will stay with me for a long time.
I highly recommend this for anyone interested in Afrofuturism and/or the history and consequences of slavery. I am definitely going to go listen to the song that this book was created from.
