I absolutely love magical stories about mermaids and the hidden world of the ocean and that is definitely what originally caught my eye. When I realized that it was more of an origin story that led back to pregnant slave women, I was even more intrigued. Nowadays, I feel like it can be hard to really come up with a unique story, but this one definitely wins the prize. While short, this book was jam-packed with a story that made me not want it to end! It was a heartbreaking story, for sure, but it was written so beautifully and I loved how the Wajinru were really their own creation. They were mermaids, but they were also something completely different. While the story takes look at their origin, it really is about memory and what having memories really means.
