This sounds like an intriguing mix of historical fiction and fantasy, if I get it right. It sounds quite original, and it's cool to try to find new ways to talk about the major issue of slavery. So for this, I commend the author!
But it may be too much out of my comfort zone.
The excerpt also sounded a bit complicated to me, to start the book this way. I'm afraid I may be totally lost. I think I would need more background information at the very beginning of the book. I'm sure it comes later though.
The style didn't grab me either, and the dialogues didn't feel very real to me.
I didn't feel the flow inviting me to read further, so this is definitely not a book I would pursue.
