I knew nothing about the song that inspired this book, let alone the group who performed it.

I won the advance copy in the raffle and excitedly awaiting the book.

This book is a great addition to the annals of Afrofuturism works. Taking the tragedy of enslaved Africans being thrown overboard to their birth as new beings makes one wish that this were so and that our ancestors were living in The Deep and not long dead.

The story moves well, as it compels you to continue on. I found it difficult to put down. You want to know more and more about the Wajinru and Yetu and if she'll survive while performing an importance service to her people.

This book has caused me to investigate further into the authors, along with the song and circumstances that brought forth this important, inspiring work.

I would recommend this book to anyone who's interested in positive alternative worlds and history. I'd definitely recommend The Deep to anyone interested in Afrofuturism.
