I think the premise of this book of mermaids being the descendants of pregnant African slave women who were tossed overboard to be very unique and interesting! This is a short but powerful story about survival, belonging, and the importance of remembering your history, no matter how painful that would be. I found the whole premise to be very unique and was thrill to find that it had LGBTQIA+ rep.

However, I read this as an audiobook, which I believe is not the best format for this. The plot jumps a bit towards the middle, and I found myself confused a lot. Even though it is a novella, I found the pacing to be a bit slow. This, along with the writing style, leads to the plot dragging in some areas. So, I had a bit of a hard time focusing.

I may come back and reread this story later in another format. I’m hoping that I will have a better experience then. Maybe my rating will change.
