This novella blew me out of the water. I was actively trying to find black authors to read book by and that's how I originally stumbled across this. It is amazing.

But too much history is soul crushing and responsibility is fled from. Instead, happy times and love is sought. But the burden never truly goes away.
After I read this, I did more research on how this story came to be and all the layers. The original idea was a mermaid story about slave women thrown off the ships while pregnant and the unborn babies learning to breathe underwater. It's depressing and creepy, but so original and unique. It drew me in to the whole story even deeper and I think about this book frequently.
