This book explores a well drawn fantasy world peoples by the amphibious creatures born of Africans thrown overboard from slave ships in the Atlantic. Yetu is the historian of their people. They carry the memories of their species, from the first baby born underwater from a drowned mother, to the present. But the history is literally killing them. The memories tearing them apart.

When they decide to flee their responsibilities— abandon their people— they take refuge in a tide pool and come into contact with humans for the first time. And there they meet a human who also understands the need to live a solitary life. Soon Yetu is torn between their desire to stay with a new partner and their responsibility to their people.

I only wished this novel were longer.
