I loved the premise of this book when i first read it - so original and compelling, and something easy to imagine. I wasn't really taken in, though, by the protagonist - i found her actions and motivations a bit confusing and frankly didn't like her. Overall I felt about her like I did about the rest of the book - I just wanted more. Ultimately it felt like a brief fable. Given its length, which was that of a novella, the story and the world outside of the ocean could have been fleshed out so much more - and I wanted some three-dimensional characters - we didn't even really get to know the protagonist, and everyone else was a mere brief sketch. The novella felt more like an outline than a finished book. Would love if this was taken and the universe expanded into a more fully realized full-length novel.
