This book combines the genres of fiction, fantasy, and historical fiction to create this beautiful story of Yetu, the historian. Yetu holds the memories of her ancestors. Her ancestors are the African slave women who had been thrown overboard by their slave owners while pregnant.

Despite the memories being difficult to bear, Yetu recognizes the importance of her task -- remembering. She recalls memories that are painful and heavy, but she does so with grace.

A major part of this book is Yetu's realization that recalling the past is what helps those in the present to move forward. She realizes that if she is to help her people to grow, they need to reclaim their pasts and, thus, reclaim their futures as well.
